The Unfinished Tower – Why the Watkin’s Tower was never completed

Watkin’s Tower, also known as the Parisian Eiffel Tower, was a proposed massive iron structure intended to be built in the heart of Paris. Conceived by English engineer Charles Henry Watkin, the tower was meant to be an iconic symbol of French engineering and innovation. However, despite its grandiose plans, the project never came to fruition.

  • Financial woes: The primary reason for the project’s abandonment was financial difficulties. With an estimated cost of £250,000 (approximately £25 million today), Watkin’s Tower was considered too expensive to build.
  • “We had hoped that the French government would provide some assistance…but unfortunately, this did not materialize.” – Charles Henry Watkin, as quoted in The Times of London
  • The tower’s design was also a subject of controversy. Critics argued that it was too similar to the Eiffel Tower, which was already under construction for the 1889 World’s Fair.
  • Alternative uses: With the financial backing not forthcoming, Watkin proposed alternative uses for the tower, such as an observatory or a monument to French engineering. However, these ideas never gained traction.

In the end, Watkin’s Tower remained an unfinished concept, leaving behind only a few blueprints and a legacy of what could have been.

“It is unfortunate that our project has not come to fruition…but we remain optimistic about future opportunities.”quote – Charles Henry Watkin, as quoted in The Times of London
